Christophe Gay Baritone

Christophe Gay received a comprehensive training at the Conservatoire de Nancy under Christiane Stutzman. He was a prize-winner at the Symphonies d’automne Singing Competition in Mâcon and he was named Adami’s Révélation Classique in 2004. He made his debut at the Nancy Opera in Luigi Dallapiccola’s Il Prigioniero, and soon thereafter was invited to perform at a number of opera venues in France and abroad (the world premiere production of Detlev Glanert’s Enigma at the Montepulciano Festival, Carmen at the Glyndebourne Festival).
He has appeared in numerous productions of baroque opera (Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride, L’Orfeo, Platée, King Arthur, Castor et Pollux, Dido and Aeneas) under the direction of conductors like René Jacobs, Christophe Rousset, and Hervé Niquet. He is also versed in the Mozartian repertoire (Don Giovanni, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte) as well as the repertoires of the 19^th and 20^th centuries (Carmen, Rigoletto, Lakmé, Andrea Chénier, Madame Butterfly, Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Wozzeck, Candide). He sang in Chabrier’s L’Étoile at the Opéra Comique under the direction of John Eliot Gardiner as well as in Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Tirésias. He also performed the title role in Viktor Ullmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis in Nancy, Caen, Luxembourg and the Cité de la Musique in Paris.
His concert repertoire includes Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Fauré’s Requiem, Bacalov’s Misa Tango, Charpentier’s Pastorale, Gounod’s Mors e Vita, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, and Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.
More recently, he appeared in the Laurent Pelly production of Les Contes d’Hoffmann in Lyon and Tokyo, L’Étoile and Les Mamelles de Tirésias in Nancy, King Arthur in Versailles, Platée in Stuttgart, Don Giovanni in Saint-Céré, Fortunio in Limoges and Rennes, Christian Lauba’s La Lettre des sables (world premiere) in Bordeaux, Lakmé in Toulon, Frédéric Verrières’ Mimi (world premiere) at the Bouffes du Nord, La Traviata (the Marquis d’Obigny), Manon (Brétigny), La Vie Parisienne (Bobinet) and Hamlet (Horatio) in Marseille, La Vie parisienne and Lakmé in Avignon, Carmen (Le Dancaïre) at the Glyndebourne Festival, Madame Butterfly (Yamadori) at the Chorégies d’Orange, La Vie Parisienne in Lausanne, Offenbach’s Le Roi Carotte and Barbe-Bleue at the Lyon Opera, L’Italiana in Algeri (Haly) in Nancy, La Traviata (the Marquis d’Obigny) and Rigoletto (Marullo) at the Paris Opera.
