During the fall season, the grub will start to make its way down into the soil so that it can protect itself during winter. After overwintering, the grub will make its way to the surface in the spring, around May/June. It will then pupate and turn into the adult beetle. We know the adult beetle more as the June bug and the Japanese beetle. During the month of July these beetles feed on above-ground plant leaves, mate, and lay eggs in the ground. The eggs soon hatch into grubs. Around August these grubs are in full feeding mode and this would be the time of year that we see the most damage. This life cycle takes 1 year.
Because grubs feed on grass roots, you can easily lift up the turf and roll it back like carpet because there are no more roots holding the grass into the ground. You can literally lift up large patches of grass (See picture above). Once you lift up a patch of grass, you should see the grub right there on the ground (See picture above). Seeing 2 or more grubs in a square foot section is considered an infestation.
