Use this model to support learning about the Middle Ages alongside other Twinkl resources and discover a new level of engagement.

How can I use the Lewis Chessmen 3D Model?: Use the model to spin the pieces around and zoom in on different features. Choose your favourite piece shown in the model and see if you can re-create it using salt dough or modelling clay. Between you and your friends, could you make enough for a whole chess set?

How can I use the Lewis Chessmen AR Model?: Take your model viewer outside or around your home or school. Find a suitable 'hidden' spot and take a photo of the chess pieces in this secret location. Now imagine you have discovered the pieces in this place - write an account of the discovery. What do the pieces look like and feel like? How did you feel when you found them?

What are the Lewis Chessmen?

The Lewis Chessmen were found in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in the Hebrides islands (to the north-west of Scotland). The chessmen were part of a 12th century hoard of 93 pieces - this included 4 chess sets as well as other Medieval games like 'tables', which was a form of backgammon. Some of the chess pieces are currently on display in the Museum of Scotland and the British Museum.

The game pieces were carved out of walrus tusks and the teeth from sperm whales. It is likely the chessmen were made in Norway. During the 12th century the Isle of Lewis was part of the Norwegian kingdom.

Chess is one of the oldest games in the world. It became popular in Europe during the Middle Ages and was seen as a great way of practising the skill of strategic warfare.

The Middle Ages is the period in history at the end of the Roman Empire. It is also referred to as the Medieval period. Medieval England began with the Norman Invasion of 1066 and lasted until the Tudors began their reign in 1485.
