The songs on this record were produced by Beka records, a German based company that was active from 1903 to 1925. In 1906, executives from the company travelled to Singapore and Batavia to record many local music sessions. Chinese opera music was also popular among Peranakan Chinese who were entertained by theatre performances like this, and Malay bangsawan theatre. Their enjoyment of such entertainment showed affinity for their Chinese identity and heritage.
