Leaving your carved pumpkins out in the garden once Halloween has passed has become an increasingly popular option. It can be a great way to help some of the wildlife in your garden, as the decaying pumpkin can be a nutritious snack for birds, squirrels, foxes and even badgers.
However, the same can't be said for hedgehogs, as pumpkins can be harmful – and potentially fatal – for these spiny mammals.
'Hedgehogs are omnivores, so if they eat too much pumpkin this can negatively impact their digestion,' says Eric Michels, head of Vivara Pro at CJ Wildlife. 'Consuming this high-fibre fruit is likely to lead to diarrhoea and consequent dehydration, which can be fatal by leaving hedgehogs too weak to hunt for food ahead of their hibernation.
'Instead of leaving pumpkins on the ground, it's best to raise them onto a garden table, on top of a wall, or chopped and added to a bird table, safely out of reach of hedgehogs. You could even try hanging them in the trees for birds and squirrels to easily feast on.
'Don't forget that now is the time when hedgehogs are preparing for hibernation, so to help them put on weight to survive the cold months of winter, I highly recommend leaving out high-calorie hedgehog-friendly food.'
