A Rare Porsche Cayenne With a Stick Shift

European  /   /  By Jim Travers

When Porsche launched the Cayenne as its first SUV, company head Ferry Porsche promised a family hauler with actual off-road capability. He also committed to delivering the sharp handling and high performance expected of the brand. To that end, a handful of first-generation Porsche Cayennes featured a six-speed manual transmission—something not offered by most competitors.

One of those rare three-pedal Cayennes was recently available on eBay.

One Clean Cayenne

The 2008 Cayenne on eBay is an impeccably maintained example that could almost pass for new. It spent its life on the salt-free roads of the western United States and currently sits in southern California.

A lively 247-horsepower, double-overhead-cam 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine provides the power. It’s matched with that rare six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. The seller says the manual Cayenne makes a fun and reliable daily driver. The Cayenne just completed a 700-mile trip with no issues, and there are 194,000 miles on the odometer.

This Porsche Cayenne is finished in a gleaming metallic tan color. There are no scratches, dents, or other flaws are visible in photos. Its attractive lines are similar to those of a new Cayenne.

The luxurious brown interior is just as lovely as the exterior. Swathed in soft leather, it barely shows signs of wear on the seats or carpets. The spacious cargo area and the driver-side floor are in great condition.

Nicely Appointed

The 2008 Cayenne’s list of modern creature comforts includes:

  • A factory power sunroof
  • Premium audio system
  • Cruise control
  • Wood and leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Heated wipers and mirrors
  • Air conditioning

The instrument panel is all business, with full instrumentation and big round dials for the speedometer and tachometer.

Freshly fitted with beefy new BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tires, this Cayenne is ready to show its off-road prowess. Original factory equipment included a locking differential, switch-activated low-range gearing, and generous ground clearance. It also has a new battery, all original factory books and manuals, and a CarFax report.

Gaining Popularity

Porsche purists howled when the Cayenne was first announced. But it quickly became the exclusive brand’s biggest seller, thanks to its combination of interior space, off-road capability, and performance.

Many Cayennes eventually found homes with some of those same purists. The Porsche Cayenne was not only a hit, it led to the company’s second SUV, the Macan. Both remain the brand’s most popular models.

First-generation Cayennes have been gaining favor with collectors, and prices are rising. If the recent skyrocketing prices of other Porsche models are any indication, this rarest of Cayennes—the engaging version with a manual transmission—will only appreciate with time. It’s an affordable and reliable Porsche-branded stick-shift SUV you can drive daily with all the comforts of a new model.
