Preah Vihear Temple

The Temple of Preah Vihear is an Angkorian era monument located in the northern province of Preah Vihear, Kingdom of Cambodia. The temple is a masterpiece of the Khmer architecture and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list on 7, July 2008. Preah Vihear Temple has the most spectacular setting of all the temples built during the six centuries-long Khmer Empire.

The Temple of Preah Vihear, an important place of pilgrimage during the Angkorian period, was built by a succession of seven Khmer emperors, beginning with Yasovarman I (r 889-910) and ending with Suryavarman II (r 1112-1152), builder of Angkor Wat. Like other temple-mountains from this period, it was designed to represent Mount Meru and was dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva.
