Closing thoughts on Flip Flappers

Finally bothered to binge through the latter half of Flip Flappers. Well that was certainly a ride.

  • The strongest point of the series is definitely the way it looks. A lot of good animation, but most importantly the fantastic worlds are amazing and the colours look great.
  • In the beginning my problem with the series was that its plot was far too vague for me to stay interested. Like increasingly weird stuff happens all the time, but nobody explains properly what’s going on. Then towards the end things started to get explained and the story got really wild, but I suppose that was to be expected when it was about alternate realities to begin with.
  • My initial reaction to Papika was positive, but she quickly got more and more grating and started to resemble rather an overenthusiastic dog than someone I would want to see form an equal mutual relationship with the protagonist.
  • I’m a little bit on the fence on whether I should consider this a magical girl anime. Like if you remove the henshin there really aren’t that many other tropes that would make me think of a magical girl show rather than “just” a fantasy show. But the henshin do exist so I suppose that means I get to include it in my magical girl collection. And I’m glad they do because otherwise I probably would not have watched it, which would have been a shame.
  • Speaking of the henshin, I really like the magical girl outfits. Nice to see something new for once instead of the generic frills-and-ribbons look.
