In other words, it is time to capitalize on our experience and knowhow to build a new strategy for K-Food exports. Korea and China recently concluded the Korea-China FTA. It is an opportunity to expand Korean agricultural exports. As part of such efforts, we have established a Distribution Center for Korean AgriProducts in Qingdao, China and opened Korean agriproduct shops on Alibaba (one of the biggest online shopping malls). We are also doing our best to pioneer new markets such as Halal, ASEAN, and so on. For example, we recently opened the Abu Dhabi aT office to expand Korean agricultural exports to the Muslim market. We are making further efforts to promote K-Food and encourage the K-Food wave around the world. aT will make even greater efforts this year to promote excellent and safe Korean agri-products in overseas markets. We will carry out more sales promotions in cooperation with big overseas distributors, establish closer contacts with the media, and discover and provide more information on promising agri-products for export. In addition to high-quality and fresh agriproducts, ingredients, and processed foods, there are also many excellent food franchises in Korea. K-Food Is Taking Center Stage in the

Halal certification is given to foods and industrial products that Muslims can eat and use without breaking Sharia (Islamic) law. Muslims, who account for one-fourth of the world’s population (about 2 billion people), are obliged by religious law to eat halal foods. But the consumption of halal foods is steadily increasing among non-Muslims as well, thanks to the merits of halal foods―such as thorough sanitary control and food safety management. With its 17 percent share (USD$1.292 trillion in 2013) of the world’s food market, the halal market is immense and expected to grow further to reach 20 percent (USD$2.537 trillion) by 2019. Thanks to the high growth potential of halal foods, Korean food companies, although still in early stages of the business, have been advancing into the halal market for several years by obtaining halal certifications with the support of the Korean government. Through the following list of questions and answers, <Korea AgraFood> would like to help our readers learn more about the Korean foods that have entered the halal market and about the Korean government’s main policies, which were designed to boost exports of Korean halal food.

What’s the current situation regarding the entry of Korean agri-products into the halal market? The number of consumers in halal countries―such as Indonesia and the UAE (United Arab Emirates)―who are interested in Korean agri-products is consistently increasing. This is thanks to the popularity of Hallyu (Korean culture wave) contents―TV dramas and K-Pop. Healthy Korean traditional foods―including kimchi and yuja (citron) tea―as well as delicious processed foods―such as instant noodles, beverages, and snacks―are steadily exported to the halal market. As of November 2015, 20 Korean food companies and 270 items have obtained internationally recognized halal certifications including MUI (Indonesia), JAKIM (Malaysia), and ESMA (for the UAE). All of those products are actively exported to the halal market. They are especially popular with the consumers interested in Hallyu. Korean halal agri-products are mainly distributed in big supermarkets, department stores, high-end stores, and KFood shops. They are highly appreciated by local consumers as premium foods.

What kind of support does the Korean government provide to boost the exports of Korean halal foods? MAFRA (Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs) and aT (Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation) have set the goal of reaching USD$1.5 billion in agri-product exports to the halal market by 2017, and they are putting a lot of effort into developing the Korean halal food industry. MAFRA and aT made an “Export Manual for the Halal Market,” and are distributing it among Korean food exporters. The manual contains information about market trends, quarantines, non-tariff barriers, and other aspects of the four major halal markets (Malaysia, Indonesia, UAE, and Saudi Arabia). The two agencies are carrying out forums in cooperation with the UAE, Malaysia, and other countries that play leading roles in international halal certification. In order to establish the infrastructure for the production of Korean halal foods, the agencies are focusing on nurturing halal horticultural product export complexes and livestock and poultry slaughterhouses that possess halal certification. Last year, MAFRA and aT organized a large trade fair, K-Food Fair, for the promotion of Korean agriproducts in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the UAE.

This is thanks to the popularity of Hallyu (Korean culture wave) contents―TV dramas and K-Pop. Healthy Korean traditional foods―including kimchi and yuja (citron) tea―as well as delicious processed foods―such as instant noodles, beverages, and snacks―are steadily exported to the halal market. As of November 2015, 20 Korean food companies and 270 items have obtained internationally recognized halal certifications including MUI (Indonesia), JAKIM (Malaysia), and ESMA (for the UAE). All of those products are actively exported to the halal market. They are especially popular with the consumers interested in Hallyu. Korean halal agri-products are mainly distributed in big supermarkets, department stores, high-end stores, and KFood shops. They are highly appreciated by local consumers as premium foods.

What kind of support does the Korean government provide to boost the exports of Korean halal foods? MAFRA (Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs) and aT (Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation) have set the goal of reaching USD$1.5 billion in agri-product exports to the halal market by 2017, and they are putting a lot of effort into developing the Korean halal food industry. MAFRA and aT made an “Export Manual for the Halal Market,” and are distributing it among Korean food exporters. The manual contains information about market trends, quarantines, non-tariff barriers, and other aspects of the four major halal markets (Malaysia, Indonesia, UAE, and Saudi Arabia). The two agencies are carrying out forums in cooperation with the UAE, Malaysia, and other countries that play leading roles in international halal certification. In order to establish the infrastructure for the production of Korean halal foods, the agencies are focusing on nurturing halal horticultural product export complexes and livestock and poultry slaughterhouses that possess halal certification. Last year, MAFRA and aT organized a large trade fair, K-Food Fair, for the promotion of Korean agriproducts in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the UAE.

vegetables, is loved by consumers around the world for its various colors, abundant nutrition, and low calories. These days, consumption of bell peppers is increasing as it is being used more often as a main ingredient for making various dishes such as salads, pastas, and pickles. Major producers of the colorful vegetable include Korea, the Netherlands, and the US. On average, Korea produces approximately 60,000 tons of bell peppers annually. Of that amount, about 40 percent is exported overseas. Currently, about 20 exporters and 330 farms in Korea are producing and exporting bell peppers to Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, and other markets. Gagopa Farm Corporation (GFC), located in Changwon in South Gyeongsang Province, is recognized as a representative Korean exporter of bell peppers. It is cultivating the vegetable under the motto of thorough quality control and high productivity. It ships all of its yearly yield to foreign countries.

Accumulated over 16 Years Results in Export of 1,500 Tons of Bell Peppers Last Year Gagopa was established in May 2000 with the hopes and wishes of the local farmers in South Gyeongsang Province who were interested in exporting bell peppers. Currently, it has nine member farms producing―based on 16 years of accumulated knowhow―high-quality bell peppers in greenhouses on a combined area of 96,200㎡―62,150 ㎡ of glass greenhouses and 34,050㎡ of vinyl greenhouses. The corporation exported about 1,500 tons of bell peppers (equivalent to about USD$5 million) to Japan last year, which is a whopping 60 percent increase from the 890 tons (USD$3.5 million) it exported five years ago in 2010. Mr. Choi Seok-rim, CEO of Gagopa Farm Corporation, said, “In particular, Gagopa is pouring efforts into improving productivity because we have a limited cultivation area. We aim for the highest possible yield of high-quality bell peppers that can satisfy consumers overseas. To this end, we are making changes to the cultivation environment and continuously learning cultivation techniques

For five years, the corporation has been applying information and communications technology (ICT) towards the cultivation and production of bell peppers. It has also been concentrating efforts on improving the cultivation environment by remodeling greenhouses. All of the member farms changed their facilities to smart greenhouses equipped with a complex environmental control system that includes automatic ventilators and sprinklers. The farms are now managing the growth and quality of the bell peppers more effectively using personal computers (PCs) and smartphones. Every year, they visit the practical training center (PCT+) in the Netherlands, an internationally approved agricultural education center, to learn professional cultivation techniques. In addition, several years ago they started learning knowhow on post-harvest management and other aspects of production from agricultural experts whom they invite to Korea from foreign countries. Such efforts have reflected positively on the harvest. The average yield of bell peppers last year was 69.5kg per 3.3 ㎡ , which is 20kg greater than the 49.5kg average of the other farms in Korea and slightly larger than the 60kg average of the Dutch bell pepper farms. Some members of the corporation were able to produce more than 80kg of the vegetable per 3.3㎡. According to Mr. Choi, the yield of bell peppers is increasing by more than 10 percent every year due to the improvement of the cultivation environment with lavish investment.

All Member Farms Possess GAP Certification The bell peppers exported by Gagopa are evaluated highly in terms of quality due to thorough management of the farms. This management includes control for diseases, pests, and agricultural chemicals. All of the member farms obtained the GAP (good agricultural practice) certificates to manage food hygiene and secure food safety. The cultivated vegetables undergo rigorous sorting at an automated sorting facility. The three-step sorting process includes naked-eye sorting and mechanical sorting, so all of the bell peppers that do not meet the standard size are removed. Thanks to the thorough quality control and sorting, no complaints or claims have been raised in the 15 years of the corporation’s existence. the vegetables grow well and further increase the yield. What’s more, the member farmers voluntarily made a study group to share information on bell pepper cultivation and increasing yields. Every year, they visit the practical training center (PCT+) in the Netherlands, an internationally approved agricultural education center, to learn professional cultivation techniques. In addition, several years ago they started learning knowhow on post-harvest management and other aspects of production from agricultural experts whom they invite to Korea from foreign countries. Such efforts have reflected positively on the harvest. The average yield of bell peppers last year was 69.5kg per 3.3 ㎡ , which is 20kg greater than the 49.5kg average of the other farms in Korea and slightly larger than the 60kg average of the Dutch bell pepper farms. Some members of the corporation were able to produce more than 80kg of the vegetable per 3.3㎡. According to Mr. Choi, the yield of bell peppers is increasing by more than 10 percent every year due to the improvement of the cultivation environment with lavish investment.

This management includes control for diseases, pests, and agricultural chemicals. The cultivated vegetables undergo rigorous sorting at an automated sorting facility. he Korean strawberry, known for its sweetness and soft texture, is making big popularity gains in

the global market. The scale of exports has reached USD$33 million per year. That is the second largest export volume among Korean fruits and vegetables, next only to the bell pepper. The main foreign markets are in Southeast Asia―Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Recently, the market has expanded to Vietnam, Russia, and Dubai. Currently, SDFAC transports strawberries to foreign countries by airplane in order to maintain the product’s freshness. As the corporation is planning to advance into the Chinese market, it is expecting that the geographically close location of China will make a maritime route also possible.

SDFAC, Strawberry Cultivation Organization for Exports SDFAC, one of the leading strawberry cultivation groups for export, has been exporting strawberries since 2002. For some 15 years, it has been devoting itself to producing safe strawberries and accumulating know-how in the export field. Currently, 57 family farms have joined SDFAC and are cultivating the fruit on an area amounting to 396,000㎡. The strawberry varieties they are growing are Maehyang and Seolhyang, each accounting for 50 percent of the production. All of the Maehyang variety is shipped overseas while only a part of Seolhyang variety is exported. The corporation’s annual export amount is USD$3.3 million, which is 10 percent of Korea’s total strawberry exports. SDFAC was able to become an industry leader by applying a production management system to the memberfarms. Consultants on the cultivation and production of strawberries visit the farming families, help them to enhance the processes, and, if there is an infestation case, designate the treatment and conduct pest control on the farms. Furthermore, they run a thorough management system.

more than 30 percent. That is why the number of farms that employ hydroponics is increasing every year. Mr. Moon revealed, “When we first introduced hydroponics, we had a hard time because we didn’t have any set level of hydrogen ion concentration (pH) or electrical conductivity (EC). But now we have set up a thorough managerial system. It allows us to have stable production and, unless there is a weather emergency, we can export the product steadily and in the required quantities.” In 2012, SDFAC took the lead in creating an Association of Production Organizations among producers exporting strawberries. This removed unnecessary competition and contributed to the stabilization of prices. The association can thus set the export price every year through negotiations with the Council of Strawberry Exporters. This year’s exporting prices are USD$13.30 per 1.32kg and USD$16.60 per 2kg, which is higher than for locally sold strawberries. Mr. Moon explained, “In Southeast Asia, strawberries had been used mostly as a cooking ingredient and as a decoration for cake, but after beginning Korean strawberry exports, Southeast Asians started eating strawberries uncooked.” He added, “Compared to Western strawberries, Korean strawberries have a moderate sweetness and acidity and a superb texture. So, despite their high price, Korean strawberries are sweeping across Southeast Asian markets.”

Emerging Necessity for New Varieties Maehyang strawberry was bred with Korean domestic technology, and it is a variety optimized for export. Its strong points are the sweetness and hard, pleasant texture. The variety is evaluated highly for its competitive power in the market. However, Maehyang is hard to cultivate and the fruit is small. The stems of the plant are also weak, so it is difficult to perform disease and insect control. These weaknesses brought about the necessity for new varieties. Mr. Moon said, “Even though we have been searching for other strawberry varieties suitable for export, we haven’t found any that would meet the expectations of farmers.” He added, “If researchers discover a way to make up for the weaknesses of Maehyang or develop new varieties for export, they will make a big contribution to expanding strawberry exports.” Another opinion was offered by Caivin Oh, CEO of Elim Trading Co., Ltd, who is in charge of strawberry exports. He said, “To gain the trust of Southeast Asian consumers, we need to approach them with outstanding varieties like Maehyang.” He continued, “In addition, we should consider that strawberry yields are increasing thanks to the wide adoption of hydroponics, so we need to set reasonable prices and connect the pricing strategy with the expansion of consumption.”

more than 30 percent. That is why the number of farms that employ hydroponics is increasing every year. Mr. Moon revealed, “When we first introduced hydroponics, we had a hard time because we didn’t have any set level of hydrogen ion concentration (pH) or electrical conductivity (EC). But now we have set up a thorough managerial system. It allows us to have stable production and, unless there is a weather emergency, we can export the product steadily and in the required quantities.” In 2012, SDFAC took the lead in creating an Association of Production Organizations among producers exporting strawberries. This removed unnecessary competition and contributed to the stabilization of prices. The association can thus set the export price every year through negotiations with the Council of Strawberry Exporters. This year’s exporting prices are USD$13.30 per 1.32kg and USD$16.60 per 2kg, which is higher than for locally sold strawberries. Mr. Moon explained, “In Southeast Asia, strawberries had been used mostly as a cooking ingredient and as a decoration for cake, but after beginning Korean strawberry exports, Southeast Asians started eating strawberries uncooked.” He added, “Compared to Western strawberries, Korean strawberries have a moderate sweetness and acidity and a superb texture. So, despite their high price, Korean strawberries are sweeping across Southeast Asian markets.”

Emerging Necessity for New Varieties Maehyang strawberry was bred with Korean domestic technology, and it is a variety optimized for export. Its strong points are the sweetness and hard, pleasant texture. The variety is evaluated highly for its competitive power in the market. However, Maehyang is hard to cultivate and the fruit is small. The stems of the plant are also weak, so it is difficult to perform disease and insect control. These weaknesses brought about the necessity for new varieties. Mr. Moon said, “Even though we have been searching for other strawberry varieties suitable for export, we haven’t found any that would meet the expectations of farmers.” He added, “If researchers discover a way to make up for the weaknesses of Maehyang or develop new varieties for export, they will make a big contribution to expanding strawberry exports.” Another opinion was offered by Caivin Oh, CEO of Elim Trading Co., Ltd, who is in charge of strawberry exports. He said, “To gain the trust of Southeast Asian consumers, we need to approach them with outstanding varieties like Maehyang.” He continued, “In addition, we should consider that strawberry yields are increasing thanks to the wide adoption of hydroponics, so we need to set reasonable prices and connect the pricing strategy with the expansion of consumption.”

Considering that Dongsong Nonghyup purchases 20,000 tons of rice from farmers, this export volume is rather small. Dongsong Nonghyup consecutively signed contracts with two Chinese buyers for export of rice last December of 2015. The contract volumes are 100 tons and 36 tons, respectively. Not only did it obtain Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification for its RPC, but all of the 1,300 farming families, which cultivate rice on 4,000 hectares, received GAP and Protected Geographic Indication (PGI) certifications as well. Sujeonggwa is a classic sweet punch flavored with ginger and cinnamon. Ginger and cinnamon contain vitamin C, so the tea is good for alleviating hangovers and heating up the body. Gyeongdan is a traditional snack made of sticky rice balls rolled in bean powder or sesame powder. A sip of sujeonggwa after a bite of chewy gyeongdan refreshes the mouth. The combination also works well in terms of nutrition. Gyeongdan may be hard to digest because it is a kind of rice cake. The cinnamon in sujeongwa, however, is good for digesting carbohydrates, so when the two foods come together, they aren’t too hard on the stomach. 1. Put six cups of water and sliced ginger in a pot. Simmer on medium heat and strain through a sieve. 2. Put six cups of water and cinnamon in a pot and boil. Strain through a sieve and mix with the ginger water. 3. Add the white and brown sugar. Simmer on low heat and cool down. 4. Put the rice powder, salt, and sugar in a bowl. Mix them while adding hot water little by little until the dough is formed. 5. Cut the dough into one-inch pieces and roll into balls. 6. Put the balls into boiling water. Cook on high until the balls start floating at the top. Wait for two to three minutes and strain them through a sieve. 7. Prepare small bowls. Put some black sesame, powdered cocoa, and green tea powder into bowls. Add one teaspoon of sugar into each bowl and mix the ingredients. Myeongdong Tourist Information Center The Myeongdong Tourist Information Center provides maps and promotional booklets of Seoul and famous tourist attractions in the rest of Korea free of charge. You can buy souvenirs and charge your cell phone there. On top of that, you can try on hanbok (Korean traditional garment) and take a picture of yourself in hanbok in a photo zone for 10 minutes. The photo zone is comprised of several background settings featuring natural sceneries, cultural assets, and festivals.

Sliced rice cake and dumpling soup Mandu (dumplings) and slices of long, cylindershaped rice cake (garae-tteok) boiled in meat broth. This dish is a combination of two separate dishes― tteokguk (sliced rice cake soup) and mandutguk (dumpling soup).
