Self-Guided Bauhaus Architecture Tour

It’s too bad that we didn’t get to the Bauhaus Museum in 2015 because it is now being renovated. I looked in vain on the internet to find some sort of self-guided tour of this architecture. I ended up finding out the addresses of various buildings and putting them on a Google map.

We started out at the temporary exhibition, but the best part of that was the gift shop. It did have information about the history of the Bauhaus and some photos.

Most of the buildings we went to see are in the Hansaviertel. But first we stopped at the Neue Nationalgalerie which was designed by Mies van der Rohe. Even if you don’t go in, you can see a number of sculptures on the outside. Also, through all the open glass, you can see some things on the ground floor, too.

This is the Walter Gropius House. He was the founder of the Bauhaus School.

I have no information on these little bungalows in the neighborhood, but they seem to fit in with the Bauhaus style.

The Eternithaus was named after fiber cement from the Austrian Eternit works. Paul Baumgarten was the architect.

As a fan of mid-century modern architecture, I appreciate the inspiration for that movement which started in Germany.
